In the Movies

collage, still from 2046; images: Alice- PULP Magazine, Google Images, and Style.com

Never made the connection before but the fashion in Wong Kar-Wai's In the Mood for Love (2000) and 2046 (2004) seems like it inspired Balenciaga Spring 08, Dries Van Noten Spring 08 and Wang Fall 08/ Spring 09 (and others I'm sure). I gained a new admiration for the cheongsam after seeing Maggie Cheung in the vibrant blue and pink floral one, not unlike an ensemble from Ghesquire's spring '08 collection.

Tak's jacket (bottom center) is the perfect male counterpart to the Wang coil dress. I wish I could find better pictures of The Android, played by Faye Wong (top left), in 2046. Her outfits look like they could have been part of Gareth Pugh's inspiration boards for Spring and Fall '09.

William Chang is the costume designer behind these all beautiful pieces. He is also an interior designer, and in addition to winning for Best Costume Design, he also picked up Best Art Direction and Best Editing for the film at the 2000 Hong Kong Film Awards. His range is apparent in his designs for both movies and the overall cohesion between them. Even within In the Mood for Love Chang dresses the traditional cheongsam with a variety of fabrics that capture the different moods of Cheung's character.

Chang is collaborating with WKW for a remake of The Lady from Shanghai set for release in 2010. As it will be another period piece, I can't wait to see what they come up with.
